Published in 1631, this early study of the Hanseatic cities was written by the German jurist and diplomat Johann Angelius von Werdenhagen. The volume examines the history, political institutions, privileges, and alliances of Hamburg, Bremen, Lüneburg, Magdeburg, Hildesheim, and other cities of northern Germany, offering a contemporary seventeenth-century perspective on the Hanseatic world.
Of particular interest is the finely engraved title page, surrounded by the coats of arms of major Hanseatic cities, with a small panoramic view of Cologne below. The book remains in its contemporary full vellum binding, with an early manuscript title preserved on the last page. Very good condition.
